I had a similiar problem attaching a toon hand to a rubber hose arm.
This is what I did:
1) build the hands with the axis at the wrist
2) place bones in the arms, put one bone at the wrist
3) animate the arms using bones
4) save the motion from the wrist bone
5) apply the motion to the hand
If everything is set up properly (rotations, scaling) it works perfectly. The
only problem being if you want to change some part of it later you have to
decide if you want to make duplicate changes to the wrist bone and hand or
repeat the above process and risk losing motion you may have added to the hand.
It's still easier than doing the whole thing by hand.
